The
development of figure-skating in
Ukraine
The building of
skating-rinks with artificial covering has expanded
figure-skating geography and favored its development in Ukraine.
Kyiv was the center of
figure-skating. In the 1950s Ukrainian
figure-skaters practiced at the open tennis-courts at the “Dynamo”
stadium and at
the frozen Holosiiv pounds. The first artificial skating-rink in Kyiv
was built
in 1960. It was 20x40 meters large and was meant for balet on ice
artists. Yury
Orlov, Larysa Drozdenko, Natalya Vorobyova and Valery Maksaev, Stalina
Zhigalova, Volodymir Karpov were Ukrainian
champions of the 1960s. Open skating-rinks with artificial covering
were built in Dnipridzerzhinsk and Novy Rozdol. The information on TV
contributed to the further promotion of figure-skating and to its
becoming
favorite kind of sport. It was already in 1979 that Ukrainian sportsmen
showed
themselves on the international arena. Vitaly Yehorov from
Kharkivshchina was
the first in men's singles in the World junior championship and also
won silver
in 1980.
Ukrainian figure-skaters
have successfully represented Ukraine,
performing in the Soviet team, on the international arena. Junior
figure-skaters in the Soviet team were mainly from Ukraine. Ukrainian
junior team has
won the following medals in the World championship: 3 gold medals,
10 silver
and 7 bronze medals.
