About Federation

The Figure-skating federation of Ukraine (FSFU) is the Ukrainian public organization. Its aims are to develop Figure-skating in Ukraine, to popularize physical training and sport, and to promote the healthy lifestyle. In 1992 the Federation was officially recognized by the International Skating Union (ISU) as a self-dependant organization. Since then the active international activity of the organization started. It includes the participating in the Olympic Games; in world, Europe championships; in World championships among juniors; in World Student Games and other international competitions. The Ukrainian Figure-skating Federation is considered a great authority in the world owing to the “Ukrainian souvenir” ISU International Junior Grand Prix held in Ukraine and to the successful performance of our figure-skaters on the international arena.

The members of the governing bodies of the International Skating Union are:

Lyudmila Valentinivna Mikhailovska – a member of the sports dances on ice technical committee, the member of the directors’ committee of the Figure-skating federation of Ukraine.

Vladyslav Yuriyovich Petuhov – a member of the figure-skating technical committee, Vice-president if the Figure-skating federation of Ukraine.

The representatives of the Federation take active part in the judicial activities of the ISU, meaning the Olympic Games and world and Europe championships.

A significant event for the Ukrainian figure-skating was the gold medal of Viktor Petrenko at the Olympics of 1992 in the French city of Albertville. He was representing the CIS team then.

The Olympics of 1994 witnessed Ukraine represented as a separate team for the first time in its history. We are very proud that the first gold medal of the Independent Ukraine was won by the Ukrainian figure-skater Oksana Bayul.

At the last Olympics in Turin (Italy) Ukrainian skating duet of Olena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov won bronze.

The development of figure-skating in Ukraine

The building of skating-rinks with artificial covering has expanded figure-skating geography and favored its development in Ukraine.

Kyiv was the center of figure-skating. In the 1950s Ukrainian figure-skaters practiced at the open tennis-courts at the “Dynamo” stadium and at the frozen Holosiiv pounds. The first artificial skating-rink in Kyiv was built in 1960. It was 20x40 meters large and was meant for balet on ice artists. Yury Orlov, Larysa Drozdenko, Natalya Vorobyova and Valery Maksaev, Stalina Zhigalova, Volodymir Karpov were Ukrainian champions of the 1960s. Open skating-rinks with artificial covering were built in Dnipridzerzhinsk and Novy Rozdol. The information on TV contributed to the further promotion of figure-skating and to its becoming favorite kind of sport. It was already in 1979 that Ukrainian sportsmen showed themselves on the international arena. Vitaly Yehorov from Kharkivshchina was the first in men's singles in the World junior championship and also won silver in 1980.

Ukrainian figure-skaters have successfully represented Ukraine, performing in the Soviet team, on the international arena. Junior figure-skaters in the Soviet team were mainly from Ukraine. Ukrainian junior team has won the following medals in the World championship: 3 gold medals, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals.
